The Tie That Bonds

Chapter 22

Trowa looked down at the progress report. She carried all 'A's except for science; which was a low 'C'. Though Mia could tell that Trowa was satisfied with her grades, she knew that Heero would have a different tune when he would see it. The teenager slid onto the counter and watched Trowa's expression as she helped herself to the remaining two cookies in the jar.

"What's the deal with science Mia?" He asked calmly and handed the report back to her.

"It bores me. I hate studying for that class. I can sit and study for hours, and ten minutes later, I just forget everything that I studied. I aced my last Spanish test though." She added as an after thought and dug through her book bag for the paper. Trowa chuckled to himself as he realized that she was having problems finding what she was looking for. It was strange to him that he and Heero were so organized, and Mia couldn't find anything half the time. "Oh, guess what?" She continued as she found the test and handed it to Trowa. "The coach is considering making me co-captain." She smiled happily at the thought.

"When will she decide?"

"Next Saturday after practice."

"You're sure to get it Mia."

"Well, it's either me or Ruby."

"You're not going to let it affect your school work, are you?" Heero asked as he stepped into the room. "Get off the counter." He added before she could answer.

"No. I'm acing all my classes except biology."

"What do you have in biology?"

"A 'C'?" Heero's eyebrow raised skeptically.

"Well, we have a really big project coming up that will probably give me a chance to raise my grade. There's also a possibility that I could land the extra credit if I turn it in early."

"If your grade doesn't come up to a 'B' at least, you can forget about basketball." Just then, the phone rang. Since it was usually always for her, Mia darted toward the living room to pick it up. Trowa looked over at his lover.

"You could have encouraged her about her other grades Heero." The Japanese man glanced at Trowa for a second. Knowing the look, he became a little suspicious. "What's wrong?" He asked in an even lower voice. Heero glanced toward the living room to witness Mia laying across the couch talking on the phone. He walked over to the stronger man and slipped his arms around his waist.

"I just feel that something's going to happen."

"You think we should move again?" Trowa asked after lightly kissing Heero's shoulder through the tee shirt.

"No. If they attack, this time we counterattack." Heero assured in a low whispered.

The gun shot still echoed in Mia's mind as she sat up straight in bed. With her heart pounding and pulse racing, she tried to calm herself. The scarred man in black had returned to her dreams. Once again, Heero was shot in the circus. . .only this time, so was Trowa. Mia told herself that it was only a dream as she laid back down and stared at her clock. It was two fifty-one in the morning.

Though she knew it was only a dream, it felt so real. . .and it scared her. What was worse was the fact that she had a strange sense of seeing this man before. . .but couldn't quiet remember where and how. It frighten her to the point that she pushed from her bed and headed across the hall to Heero and Trowa's room. As she stopped at the door, she listen for movement. At first, she didn't hear anything, but as she listened closer she could hear Trowa's soft pleasurable pants. Satisfied that they were both okay, she returned to her bed room and climbed back in bed.

Even with knowing that they were safe, she felt that something was coming. She wasn't sure what it was; when it was coming; or where. . .but the feeling made her uncomfortable. It also stole several hours of sleep that night. She stared at the clock until she no longer could see it. Her mind returned to the dream as she attempted to decipher what it meant.

Mia turned around quickly and scanned the crowd of people behind her. She could have sworn that someone was watching her. Sam looked down at his girlfriend in confusion before bringing her eyes back to him.

"Hey. . .remember me?" He teased lightly.

"I'm sorry. Did you ever have the feeling that someone is following you?" She asked slowly and Sam smiled.

"Don't you always have that feeling?"

"It's been worse lately."

"You shouldn't be so paranoid. . .I think you get that from Heero." Trowa laughed at the statement as Heero glared at the transmitter. His colbat eyes rose to his lover.

"You think that's funny?"

"Not funny. . .just odd."

"I don't think I like this Sam guy anymore." Trowa leaned back in the passenger seat of the Mustang parked in back of the dance club. He returned his full attention to the lap top on his lap.

"Damn battery is going dead. Don't you keep this charged anymore?" Heero reached into the glove compartment and pulled out an adapter. He attached it to the lap top, and the cigarette lighter.

Both men felt guilty about spying on Mia. It wasn't that they didn't trust her. . .they did. . .it was so that they could make sure she was safe. Ever since she hit her pre teen years, she had been spending more and more time out of the house. It wouldn't be fair to her to keep her locked away from other people. . .though following her everywhere was a lot more difficult for them, it was easier on her at least.

"What the hell?!" He moved closer to view the image. "She didn't leave the house in that dress." Trowa just shook his head at his lover. "She better not have changed in the back of his car."

"Why?" Trowa tried to hide his smile as Heero glared at him.

"What the hell do you mean 'why'? She looks like a prostitute. Did you let her buy that?"

"Heero, she's going to wear what she wants; you can't stop her. Besides, you're the one that gave her money and said 'buy what you want'."

"I'd like to see her wear it after I burn it tomorrow while she's at school."

"Heero."

"That's why girls get raped. They dress like that, and drives guys nuts."

"First off, people get raped because of sick minds, not the way one dress. Secondly, she can kick any guys' ass that's in that club right now. . .Sam included. You can't very well expect to buy her a chastity belt."

"They still sell those?" Heero looked up in curiosity.

Mia slid into a seat and watched as Sam headed toward the rest rooms. She opened her bottle water and took a few drinks. The next instant, Jess slid in across from her friend. A huge smile plagued her features as she stared at Mia.

"I know that look. . .what cute guy is here?"

"Yuji." Jess squealed and pointed toward the boy that was advancing them. "Just act like I've been here the whole time. I don't want him to think that I'm an outcast with no friends."

"Jess, sometimes I worry about you."

"Do I look okay? Is my make up smudged or hair out of place?"

"You look as perfect as always."

"Wish me luck." She grinned as Yuji was closing in faster.

"Good luck."

"Now, hurry and strike up an intelligent conversation so when he gets here he won't know I was preparing for him." Mia couldn't help but laugh.

"Jess, you're insane." She chuckled as Yuji stood at the table.

"Hey, don't we go to the same school?" Yuji asked in a seductive voice as he looked straight at Mia without giving a first look to Jessica.

"Yeah."

"Mind if I join you? I'd like to make a few new friends."

"Actually, I'm sort of here with someone." Mia informed, and her eyes flew to the rest rooms. Sam was no where in sight.

"I'm sorry, you must be taking this wrong. I didn't want to join you as a possible date, but as two people trying to be friends."

"If that were true, then you would have talked to my friend. . .but you haven't even looked at her, let alone say 'hi.' That indicates that you're not looking to make friends." Jess' eyes near bugged out. The tone in Mia's voice was familiar to her, but not often.

"Well, you're a very blunt, straight to the point type of person."

"And you're a very conceited, bull shitting type of person." Mia wasn't sure why she was being so crude to the boy. There was something about him that placed her on pins and needles. Without another word, Yuji slid into the seat next to Mia. "I don't recall anyone inviting you to sit down." She snapped, completely offended.

"Do you treat all new guys this way?"

"No, just assholes. Now get lost." With that, she shoved him from the booth. Yuji was surprised by her strength. . .the proof was in his green eyes. Before he hit the floor, he gained his footing.

"What's going on here?" Sam asked as he stood next to Yuji. The two boys' eyes met and before Mia could say anything, the blonde answered.

"Nothing. I was just apologizing to this lady for being an 'asshole'." He stated and turned his attention to Mia. "I didn't mean to come off that way. Forgive me?" Mia turned from him. She liked it better when he was acting as a jerk. At least that way, she had an ideal of what his objective was. . .with him being nice now, it was hard to say.

"Mia, are you all right?" Sam wondered; clearly curious as to what his girlfriend felt. She got the impression that if Yuji was bothering her, Sam would stop him.

Back in the Mustang, Trowa and Heero looked at each other. Both men wore the same expression. Neither of them trusted the boy known as Yuji. . .and that was definitely worth researching.
